FG set to reduce desertification — Minister

The Federal Government has announced its preparedness to reduce desertification, air pollution and environmental hazards in the country.

The newly sworn in Minister of Environment, Mrs. Laurentia Mallam, said the government would ensure that all forms of environmental hazards in the various states across the country were reduced to the barest minimum.

In a statement made available on Sunday by the Deputy Director, Press, Ministry of Environment, Mr. Ben Goong, the minister was quoted as saying that her ultimate goal was to ensure that Nigerians enjoyed a decent environment free from man-made hazards.

She noted that the ministry, under her watch, would reduce environmental problems arising from natural disasters to the barest minimum.

The statement read in part, “In her inaugural briefing and meeting with management and staff of the Ministry of Environment, the minister stated in unmistakable terms that she believed in team work.

“She added that she would carry along all stakeholders, including the management and staff of the ministry, in the discharge of her duties.”

Mallam thanked the President for finding her worthy for a ministerial appointment and promised to justify the confidence reposed in her.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr. Taiye Haruna, told the minister that the management and employees would render their support to ensure that her tenure was a huge success.
