The Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday took a swipe at critics of the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, describing them as “basket mouths.”
The PDP, in an attempt to pass a vote of confidence in the Jonathan administration, posted a picture of the dualised Abuja-Lokoja Highway on its Facebook page.
The party then drew the attention of the critics to the road rehabilitation, which it describes as one of the successes of the Federal Government.
The caption attached to the photograph read, “Where are all these basket mouth (of say) Jonathan this, PDP that? This is the once notorious Giri Junction, near Gwagwalada, along the Abuja-Lokoja Highway.”
But Nigerians have expressed their displeasure with the words used by the self-acclaimed largest political party in Africa.
According to them, it is crude and wrong for the party to have used such words on those who choose to hold the government accountable.
To this end, some Nigerians dropped angry comments on the official Facebook page of the party. One of them is Adeyemi Micheal, who notes that the choice of word of the PDP is “demeaning.”
“It is a shame that a party will use a demeaning language to showcase what is primarily the function of a government as achievement. The PDP is a crude and clueless party that still operates with 18th century idea in the 21st century.
“No wonder we are in this deep mess. Dear PDP, it is time to leave the scene. The masses and not All Progressives Congress will make you irrelevant by 2015. Keep insulting our sensibilities,” he says.
As the criticism of the PDP became fiercer, some say the PDP should have done Nigerians great favour by posting the pictures of dilapidated road networks abound in the country on its social media accounts for the world to see.
“Is Giri Junction end of the Abuja-Lokoja Highway the only road that we have in Abuja? What about the road at Bwari that abandoned since last year? What about Sagamu Road that leads to Ewekoro? Please stop lying to us because we are not blind,” another respondent, Temitayo Lawal, says.
For Odunze Frankline, the PDP-led government has not done the Nigerian citizens any favour with the road construction. Frankline argues that it is surprising that the ruling party will be basking in the euphoria of road dualisation when numerous socio-economic challenges and insecurity pervade the land.
Frankline posits, “No Government is doing anybody a favour to be performing; it is the government’s obligation to do so! When we see youths gainfully employed, no more terrorist killings; no more looting of the treasury; then we can say he (Jonathan) is performing.”
Some Nigerians also say no developmental achievement will be worthwhile when there is no guarantee of security of lives and property in the country.
Ibrahim Umar, in a post on the PDP Facebook page notes, “The major problem with the PDP-led government is the issue of insecurity. Infrastructure wise, the government may be trying but as long as there is no guarantee of people’s lives and property, nobody will see any developmental achievement of the President. If people are not alive, who is to enjoy the infrastructure, human beings or ghosts?”
The party’s followers, who caught up with the post on Twitter, have also urged the PDP to collaborate with the FG in leading a campaign that would clampdown on corrupt practices in government.
They argue that a genuine war against corruption will ensure the provision of roads that are more motorable. They add that the anti-corruption fight should start with accounting for the alleged missing $20bn.
“PDP, where is our missing $20bn? If returned, we can have more of these roads in each geopolitical zone. So, return our money,” Banjoko Olusegun writes in a tweet to the PDP.
