Centenary award, Jonathan and Abacha’s $458m loot

Less than a week after President Goodluck Jonathan conferred an award for “Outstanding Promoter of Unity, Patriotism and National Development” on late Gen. Sani Abacha, for “his contributions to the nation,” the United States has ordered a freeze on $458m in assets stolen by the former dictator and his accomplices.

Comments:

Ijaodola: The Goodluck Jonathan-led Federal Government should be ashamed of itself! If our national heroes are international criminals, we should ask ourselves whether there is anything like morality in our sense of judgment.

Chidi: Please, where, in a sane society, are criminals given national awards? What kind of a country is Nigeria for God’s sake? In a sane society, no hospital, school, or airport will be named after Abacha. Giving Abacha a national award is calling good evil and evil good. It is shameful for the government to think of it at all, let alone do it.

Our politicians should note that they have, by that action, told the world that there is nothing wrong with how Abacha governed Nigeria. The whole world will further lose their respect for these politicians — assuming the world still has any more respect for them at all.

As for Abacha’s children, Gumsu and Sadiq, they should never attempt to hold any political office at any level at all. What a shameless set of people!

Dele Odugbemi: Prof. Wole Soyinka has been vindicated and honoured by this awful report on criminal enrichment by Abacha and his family while he was Head of State. A decent country will not honour a former ruler like Sani Abacha who stole us blind during his tenure.

Unofficial guide to being a Nigerian man (2)

You have to be a man, before you can become a gentleman

•Do not let anybody — including a soldier — insult your mother and get away with it.

•Find a girl who is a Chimammanda on the streets and a Maheeda in the bedroom. She exists.

•Never take financial advice from anybody, unless it’s coming from the likes of Aliko Dangote, Bill Gates or Carlos Slim.

•Buy a tuxedo before you are 30. Stay that size.

•Just because it’s free beer doesn’t mean you should drink a carton.

•One girlfriend at a time is probably enough.

•It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.

•You should have a role model and a mentor.

•Measure yourself only against your previous self.

•Make sure you are always five minutes’ early.

•When you admire the work of artists or writers, tell them. And spend money to acquire their works.

•Just because you have a better phone or car does not make you a better person.

•Yes, of course you have to buy her dinner.

•Staying angry is a waste of energy.

•If she is rude to the waiter and nice to you, she is a rude person

•Always bring a bottle of something to the party.

•Avoid that “last” whiskey. You’ve probably had enough.

•When you are invited to go somewhere or try something new, say yes as often as you can, you never know what you might miss out on.

•Buy drinks for your friends once in a while.

•Do not beg for sex. Just because you want beef does not mean you should call a cow your brother.

•Date women outside your social set. You’ll be surprised.

•If it’s got velvet ropes and lines, walk away unless you know someone.

•You cannot have a love affair with whiskey because whiskey will never love you back.

•Show me who you honour, and I will know the character of your person, for that shows me what your ideal or character is, and what kind of person you long to be.

•If you believe in evolution, you should know something about how it works.

•Learn to see the good in everything, except Boko Haram. Boko Haram members are bad people.

•If you are in a relationship for sex alone, then a hooker would be a cheaper option.

•Remember, “Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men.”

•One cannot always be a hero, but one can always be a man.
