Nigerian shooters have bounced back to international reckoning at the ongoing African Shooting Championship in Egypt, winning two bronze medals.
The shooters, who have not participated in international tournaments for several years, defied all odds to win two medals in the 50m female rifle and the 10m rifle events at the Egypt Armed Forces Shooting Arena in Cairo.
Other countries participating in the tournament are hosts Egypt, South Africa, Tunisia, Algeria, Kenya and Libya.
The impressive performance of the shooting team is a welcome development as Nigeria aim to win medals at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
The African Shooting Championship is one of the events lined up by the shooting federation to prepare the country’s shooters for the Commonwealth Games and the World Junior Championships in China later in the year.
President of the Nigeria Shooting Federation, Wole Madariola, expressed optimism that the national team would win more medals before the end of the competition on Friday.
The Nigerian team was exposed to the latest shooting range and facilities while in camp in Lagos and Abuja respectively ahead of the African tournament.
