Flag Officer Commanding, Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Obiora Medani, has raised the alarm over an erosion, which it claimed is threatening its barracks in Calabar.
Medani said raised the alarm on Monday in Calabar after inspection of facilities at various Navy formations under the command in Calabar.
He said the Navy would seek the collaboration of Cross River State and Federal Government to control the erosion sites at Nigerian Navy Barracks in Calabar.
Obiora said the situation was increasingly becoming worse such that the command could not do it alone.
He said, “Yes, it is a serious problem but our major focus is to improve our civil/military relationship. We believe that the civil authorities will have to come and help us because the scope of the problem is beyond the resources of the Navy.
“But we hope that through cooperation with the State and the Federal Agencies that are responsible for ecological problems, we will be able to address the problem.”
The FOC said there was the urgent need to tackle the erosion menace, so that it would not continue to deteriorate and “we do not want it.’’
He also said the Navy would soon commission its Reference Hospital under construction in Calabar, adding that the hospital was abandoned since 30 years ago.
He described the hospital as a dream come through for the Navy, adding that it was a project that every naval officer should be proud of.
Also speaking, the Director, ULO Consultants, Mr Bartholomew Ifeanyi, said the hospital complex was almost completed.
